Hill & Dale - Vintage 2022 Report
Wijnmaker Guy Webber van Hill & Dale, Stellenbosch: ‘de oogst van 2022 is goed begonnen!’

2022 was tot nu toe erg goed voor Hill & Dale, zeker in vergelijking met alle uitdagingen en Coronabeperkingen van het recente verleden.
De natte winter van 2021 maakte effectief een einde aan de droogte die sinds 2015 in Zuid-Afrika heerste. De dam die onze boerderij van het nodige water moet voorzien, was herschapen tot een klein voetbadje voor vogels, maar ondertussen heeft hij terug een peil bereikt van meer dan 4 meter. Tot midden januari waren de dagtemperaturen echt mild, met heerlijk koele nachten. Ideale omstandigheden voor de wijnstokken en de druiven, die langzaam kunnen rijpen, met behoud van alle complexiteit en fruitaroma’s. Eind januari en begin februari stegen de temperaturen fors, met een uitschieter van 39,63 graden Celsius, maar dat is normaal voor de tijd van het jaar.
De oogst van 2022 begon met de eerste Pinotage-druiven op vrijdag 4 februari. De druiven zagen er uitzonderlijk goed en gezond uit, en het ziet ernaar uit dat het alcoholgehalte ook wat lager zal liggen. De pH-waarden waren ook gezond en de druivenpitten mooi rijp. De eerste tank heeft nu zijn alcoholische gisting voltooid en is bezig met zijn malolactische gisting.
Eind 2021 verscheen de jaarlijkse Zuid-Afrikaanse John Platter Wijngids, onze lokale "wijnbijbel". Onze wijnen scoorden goed en we zijn buitengewoon trots op de uitstekende rating die onze Pinotage 2019, en de rest van de wijn kregen. De goede prijs-kwaliteitverhouding van onze Hill & Dale wijnen valt echt niet te ontkennen!
Na de ontdekking van de Omikronvariant werd ons prachtige land tijdens de eindejaarsperiode geïsoleerd van de rest van de wereld. Het doet dus extra deugd dat het aantal internationale bezoekers opnieuw stijgt en dat ze opnieuw met volle teugen genieten van onze lokale gastvrijheid, de Afrikaanse zon en een lekker glas Stellenbosch-wijn. Laten we allemaal hopen dat we nooit meer het isolement hoeven te ervaren dat we de afgelopen twee jaar zo onnatuurlijk hebben doorstaan.

The 2022 season has, so far, been very good to us. Following all of the distractions, drought, alcohol sales-bans in our local market, general COVID restrictions, etc., things are certainly looking up.
Starting at the beginning, the winter of 2021 effectively ended the on-going drought which we’d experienced since 2015. After having had our farm dam dry enough for birds to walk across without getting their knees wet, we now have just over 4m of water in it and have even managed to supplement some soil moisture in the Pinotage and Chardonnay vineyards over the past few weeks.
Until the middle of January, we’d also experienced really mild day-time temperatures with wonderfully-cool nights. For vines and grape ripening, these conditions are almost perfect as they result in a long, slow ripening with good development and retention of fruit flavours in the grapes. As can be expected, the end of January and beginning of February saw temperatures rising dramatically with the maximum seen so far being 39,63 degrees Celsius – the highest temperature we’ve see since 3 March 2015, when it went up to 40,9 degrees.
We eventually started our 2022 vintage with the harvesting of the first Pinotage vineyard on Friday, 4 February. As can be seen from the photo, the grapes looked exceptionally good and the analyses indicate slightly lower expected alcohol contents for this wine for the vintage. pH levels were also healthy with the grape seeds being nicely ripe. The first tank has now completed its alcoholic fermentation and is busy with its malolactic ferment – not my favourite time for tasting the wine as it transitions from being a sweet grape juice to being a dry, alcoholic wine. Kind of like the “Terrible Twos” for wine. 😉
The end of 2021 saw the release of the annual Platter Guide, our local “wine bible”, and we are exceptionally proud of the four-star ratings received by our Pinotage 2019 and Cabernet Sauvignon 2019. To these, add an overall three-and-a-half-star judgement to the rest of the range, and the wines’ value-for-money offerings become difficult not to see.
Following the fall-out from the Omicron variant’s discovery in December last year and the isolation of our beautiful country from the rest of the world for the Festive Season, it is gratifying, humbling and exciting to see the increasing numbers of international visitors again walking our streets, enjoying our local hospitality and soaking up the African sun with a glass of Stellenbosch wine in-hand. Let’s all hope that we never again have to experience the isolation we have so unnaturally endured over the past two years.
